Jet and Power Pull brand Chain Come-Alongs are the Cadillac of pulling tools. The gearing action permits a smooth and highly controllable movement (up & dn), which explains why chain style come-alongs cost so much more than the cable-styles.
Now, Chain Hoists (shown below) are specifically rated for overhead lifting (while the 'come alongs' are not!). This means 'hoists' use tighter tolerances and certifiable materials in the mechanisms to improve safety. Most also provide a brake for extra safety. (If you need a Chain Hoist -- for shop applications, checkout our Hoists & Trolleys category).
When selecting a Chain Come-Along, load and length capacity will be the primary factors. Next will be length of handle, cause a shorty means more work if you pull near its maximum load. You might also want the 'freewheeling' feature, especially if you go for the extra long chain.
For Chain Hoists, pay close attention to 'lift per turn'. This will tell you how fine a movement you can make (which becomes a big concern when hoisting an engine in or out!). For maximum safety, where you might exceed the hoist's rating, consider Jet's 'drop forged' hooks (offered in their Mini Mite models), which are designed to bend slowly (rather than pop) when exceeding its capacity.
